What the Heck is WiMax? Understanding the New Internet

Author: Jason Tandle

Sometimes technology just makes sense, and other times it might require a bit more of an explanation. While things like Gmail instantly catch on, other developments in Google software and technology, like Wave, are met with a level of bafflement. Sure, we’re all impressed, but really, why did we need that? However, it is important to not mistake those things that are somewhat not essential with other things that offer a legitimate alternative but might initially be a bit confusing.

Up until now,, check email from another computer
, most people, check email from another computer
, thought that the internet could only be accessed through a series of wires that connect computers with modems and modems with the cable or internet service provider. And while this is true for many people around the country who get online with broadband or T3, there are just as many others who opt for other ways of surfing the web.

Those who spend a lot of their time out and about might check email a lot more on a wireless internet connection, either from an office or from some sort of cafe. With wireless, the signal from a modem is then sent to a greater area via a router. A lot of airports have been investing in Wi-Fi so that their customers are a bit happier when delayed, though, check email from another computer
, just as many places also charge a pretty penny for access.

The problem with the existing forms of the internet, the old internet, is that the limitations are noticeable and great. If you want to get online with a wire connection, you have to be near a wire. Want to sit on the couch? Get a longer wire, or just deal with it. Likewise, wireless internet is known, check email from another computer
, for dropping out all of the time, coming in and out even if you’re sitting right next to the router, and generally being slightly more unreliable than it should be, given the time to implement changes thus far.

This is why people are getting so excited about–and making such a huge deal over–the new version of wireless, or WiMax. Unlike other variations on preexisting ideas, this actually brings something new to the table: an approach to providing internet that looks a lot more like what a cell phone company does for those who want to make calls and send and receive data. WiMax depends on a system of towers, each of which can beam a signal to another nearby tower, which in turn sends it to one further away.

Slowly but surely, this network has grown to stretch from coastline to coastline, offering most people in the United States the chance to switch.

Only most people haven’t, because they aren’t on the cusp of technology. The first question is usually how difficult it is to understand how WiMax works. Thankfully, it’s simple. You just turn your computer on once it is properly equipped, and it automatically connects to the network.

It’s just like a cell phone. Once connected, it’s possible to do anything from just about anywhere. Since the network is 4G, it means that even streaming video or live chatting is possible. That is why this actually counts as an innovation on the internet, and not just the same old thing in new packaging.

Let 4g internet bring you closer to the web, wherever you are. Frontrunner clear wireless internet will be the name on every tech-head’s lips for the next few months, so get ready.
