There are too many tragic stories of elder abuse including neglect, physical, sexual or psychological abuse. Another crime against the elderly is that of “using the money or resources of an older person without their knowledge or consent to benefit yourself or another person.”
Identity theft falls into that category of crimes against the elderly as strangers, or even family members and caregivers take advantage of the elderly in order to gain their long saved money, hard earned credit or well deserved benefits. Read more...

The legal matters discussed here are based on the Ontario Business Corporations Act and court decisions decided in Ontario and under similar legislation across Canada. Most businesses are incorporated because of the benefits of limiting liability and potential tax savings. Most businesses have more than one owner or shareholder. The relationship among the shareholders can spawn considerable disagreement.
In a surprisingly large number of cases, the disputes, private disability and law, among shareholders can lead to angry and complicated litigation with uncertain outcomes. Forty-two states now have some type of safe haven legislation. (The following states do not have safe haven legislation: AK, HI, MA, NE, NH, VT, VA and WY.) Most of the laws designate hospitals, emergency medical services, fire stations and police stations as safe locations. One exception is New York, which stipulates that the baby may be left with a suitable person or may be left in a suitable location so long as an appropriate person is promptly notified. Read more...

Surgeons spend years in school, training to ensure that they are able to make the appropriate decisions while under immense pressure. However, hospitals often over-work their staff, inhibiting their decision-making ability for immediate surgeries. Before going under the knife for a complicated surgical procedure, worrying that your surgeon isn’t adequately rested is the last thing you need to worry about.
Yet surgical medical malpractice kills an estimated 98,000 hospital patients every year, according to the Institute of Medicine. And that doesn’t even take into account those who have sustained life-changing injuries as a result of surgical malpractice.
